Dedham Vale Driving School
Learners Start Here
You've taken the first step towards being a safe and competent driver. Below we've answered some of the most frequently asked questions.
What do I need to start learning to drive?
Your very first stage is to obtain a provisional driving licence; your friendly local Post Office will have the form. Send off in good time, your Dedham Vale Instructor will want to see it before he/she allows you to drive.
Who can teach me?
To accept reward/payment for driving tuition, the teacher must be approved by the Driving Standards Agency. A fully qualified ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) will display a green licence in the windscreen of the car. A Trainee Instructor can also accept reward/payment for lessons - he/she will display a pink licence in the windscreen.

How many lessons will I need?
The answer is always difficult but will depend on any road experience you already have, cycling and motorcycle experience can help but above all - it's the dedication you give to your lessons and any aptitude you may have. Some books believe that a two hour lesson for every year of age gives a good guide but rest assured we at Dedham Vale will help you progress as quickly and safely as possible and will continually monitor your progress and keep you in touch with your progression.
What will I do on my first lesson?
Many potential learners fear their first lesson, but at Dedham Vale we appreciate this. We won't expect you to drive away from your home; we'll take you to a suitable area, properly introduce ourselves and set out what we aim to achieve from the first session. It's highly unlikely that you'll be driving on dual carriageways or reversing on your first lesson - so relax and enjoy the lesson.

Will there be other learners in the car when I'm learning?
We guarantee one-to-one tuition. Many of our competitors make their pupils drop off previous customers and collect next pupils but at Dedham Vale your hour is devoted to you and others will not dictate our choice of route.
What car will I learn in?
Our current fleet consists of Peugeot 207's, Ford Fiesta's, Vauxhall Corsa, Seat Ibiza, Volkswagen Golf, Nissan Micra while the Automatic option is the Toyota Yaris. At Dedham Vale, the cars are especially chosen for their reliability, comfort and easiness to drive. All are very modern, regularly serviced and of course comprehensively insured for your use. (See the 'About Us' section)

Will I know how well I'm doing?
Yes. At the end of your lesson, your Instructor will fill-in the relevant sections on your Dedham Vale progress card and will discuss areas of your driving.
How will I know when I'm ready for my test?
Your Instructor will always keep you in touch with the tasks ahead and once he/she has taught you the syllabus, they will offer you a mock test. Another Dedham Vale Instructor will meet you on a lesson and will play the part of a driving test examiner. This represents the most realistic mock test available and at the end of the test - you will know whether your driving is up to standard.
What course will suit me?
Whether you want one lesson a week or 30 hrs in a week - Dedham Vale has the Instructors, vehicles and expertise to get you on the road.
How much will it cost?
Dedham Vale's current hourly charge for a one hour lesson is £22, students learn for £21 per hour but big savings can be made for block bookings (see our section on Intensive courses). For example a block booking of 10hrs costs just £205!

If you're not from our immediate area, why don't you dedicate a few days and stay in this area (see our section on Residential courses).
